Work Instructions vs Instructions

Hi, could you please clarify the difference between ‘Work Instructions’ and ‘Instructions’ on the Work Order page? I want to be sure I’m using the correct section for each type of information.

Hi @cavaliercablingllc

On a Work Order in Cetec, the Instructions and Work Instructions fields are used for different kinds of notes. Instructions are for general, high-level information about the job. This might include special customer requests, priority notes, handling or shipping considerations, or anything someone should know when looking at the work order overall. These notes describe the job, not the steps to do it.

Work Instructions are for the people doing the work. This is where you explain how the job should be performed, such as the steps to follow, setup or tooling details, and any quality or inspection checks that need to happen. These notes are more detailed and are meant to be used on the shop floor.

A good rule of thumb is if it explains what the job is or what to watch out for, use Instructions. If it explains how to do the work, use Work Instructions.

Just a side question on this topic, Is it possible to save work instructions to particular part numbers so that same instructions will always populate when the part is used? Thanks!

@mikevd

Yes, you can do that, and it’s actually a great way to keep things consistent. You can save work instructions on a part so that whenever that part is used on a work order, the instructions automatically show up. It saves time, makes sure everyone follows the same steps, and you can still tweak or add notes on the work order if something’s different for that job. Go to the Part record, then click the Revisions button, then click “Labor Plan”, enter the steps or details that should always apply when that part is used. Then, when you create a Work Order that includes that part, Cetec will automatically pull those instructions into the Work Order’s Work Instructions field. You can still edit or add to them on the Work Order if a specific job needs something different.
